Standard 5 Teachers know how to manage a classroom. The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
Rationale 1: The Project Based Learning assignment was created to teach students about insects while through all of the academic areas: math, science, social studies, and language arts. A lesson plan was prepared for each academic area and incorporated a variety of different types of teaching strategies such as cooperative learning, hands-on activities and project based learning to meet the needs of all types of learners to help manage the classroom. The unit plan is in direct accordance to my kindergarten curriculum. The unit also involves a community component directly involved with the N.E.W. Zoo in Suamico. At the end of the unit, the students will use the knowledge they learned about insects learned during the unit to present their projects and then donate them to the N.E.W. Zoo.
KSD 5.K.4 The teacher understands the principles of effective classroom management and can use a range of strategies to promote routines and positive relationships, cooperation, and purposeful learning in the classroom. Project Based Learningfocuses on student-centered inquiry and group learning with the teacher acting as a facilitator and monitor. PBL is a different teaching technique that promotes and practices new learning habits. By setting well-defined routines and objectives, students engage in design, problem solving, decision making, and investigative activities in a group or by themselves. This has been very useful in managing my classroom effectively. 5.S.1 As an individual and a member of a team, the teacher selects and creates learning experiences that are appropriate for curriculum goals, relevant to learners, and based upon principles of effective instruction (e.g. that activate students’ prior knowledge, anticipate preconceptions, encourage exploration and problem-solving, and build new skills on those previously acquired). The PBL insect unit is in direct accordance to my early learning academic standards. The lessons in this unit are developmentally appropriate and reach out to all ability levels and learners. Before each lesson, we take time to critically think, I use relevant questioning to get the students thinking about insects, I validate their comments and ideas as very important and I encourage problem solving skills. 5.D.3 The teacher values the role of students in promoting each other’s learning and recognizes the importance of peer relationships in establishing a climate for learning. Kindergarten students enjoy learning from each other. The children are respectful of each other’s ideas and look forward to working together. They are flexible and embrace other children’s ideas and input. This type of learning encourages strong confidence in each child and builds peer relationships.
