Standard 8 Teachers know how to test for student progress. The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the pupil.
Rationale 1: I developed the checklist and rubric to assess my students on their final PBL project insect unit: Going Buggy! The students worked in cooperative groups to learn, create and present an assigned insect and their ability to work with others and be a team member. Upon conclusion of this project, students had to present to another class and to our principal. The rubric allowed me to have an accurate record of each student group’s poster and presentation. Using rubrics are an important way to let students know a lesson’s expectations and helps them to feel confident and be successful.
KSD 8.K.2 The teacher knows how to select, construct, and use assessment strategies and instruments appropriate to the learning outcomes being evaluated and to other diagnostic purposes. The rubric that I created for my PBL, communicated the expectations I had for this activity. 8.S.3 The teacher uses assessment strategies to involve learners in self-assessment activities, to help them become aware of their strengths and needs, and to help them to set personal goals for learning. A rubric is a great assessment tool which allows students to self assess and understand their strengths and any areas that they need to improve on. 8.D.2 The teacher is committed to using assessment to identify student strengths and promote student growth rather than to deny students access to learning opportunities. The rubric assesses the students work and shares with them the growth that was made any areas that need to be improved.
